The University of Macau’s (UM) English Debating Team recently won the “Star of Outlook National College English Debating Competition” championship, according to a statement from the public university on Wednesday.
The contest followed the British Parliamentary debate format, which according to Wikipedia comprises four teams, containing two speakers each, which are divided into two sides that speak for and against the motion
The statement noted that UM’s Faculty of Science and Technology, Honours College, and Chao Kuang Piu College student Ali Omar Kassana Jimenez and Wang Hanyu, a student in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Honours College, and Cheng Yu Tung College, competed against top debaters from mainland universities during the preliminary rounds.
The statement said that Jimenez and Wang demonstrated “exceptional speaking skills and strategic thinking” across the five rounds, advancing to the semi-finals with the second-highest score and ranking among the top ten best speakers. They earned a place in the grand final.
Faculty of Business Administration and Cheng Yu Tung College student Zhu Shuairong and Wang Hanyu also represented the UM team in the grand final in Beijing against three other finalist teams, with the duo impressing judges with their debating skills, the statement said. The event filmed by the China Central Television (CCTV) and will be broadcast nationwide.
