A total of 29 artists are showcasing their works of different media at the Creative Macau gallery in Nape for a collective exhibition entitled “21st Century”, with each artist presenting their take on the theme.

The exhibition, which kicked off on Tuesday and is on until September 28, also celebrates CREATIVE MACAU – Centre for Creative Industries’ 21st anniversary.

The exhibition demonstrates the role Creative Macau has been playing since its inception in the creative and cultural industries, according to a statement provided at Tuesday’s opening ceremony. Its theme “implies that for the past 21 years, the exhibitions and activities held at the centre have been a medium for our members to freely express themselves to all sorts of audiences”, the statement said.

Speaking with reporters after the opening event, Creative Macau’s Co-ordinator Margarida Cheung Vieira said that all the artists come from different backgrounds, making for “very diversified” mediums such as painting, sketching and installations.

Each of these artists are trying to mimic what the 21st century means to them, Cheung said, giving their own expression, definition and passion in conveying what the 21st century is all about.

Cheung also noted to the Post that based on what the artists contributed, she thinks that they really looked at this subject with great enthusiasm, resulting in the “brilliant work” that they are happy about.

Meanwhile, in a separate interview with the Post at the event, Marketing and Communication Manager Menn Chow (周萬生) spoke on the significance of the exhibition as it also marked Creative Macau’s 21st anniversary.

This edition is like a gathering, Chow said, noting that it brings together both new and old artists. He added that Creative Macau has, over time, also seen artists have their first exhibition, whether solo or in a group. It provides a “really good window” for people to pick up on what artists can do and their potential to go further, while at the same showcasing the propensity of the artistic work in Macau.

Echoing what Creative Macau President Paulo Canelas de Castro said in his speech, Chow noted “This is really a connection between the public and the artists and the art scene in Macau too”.

Moreover, Chow said that he hopes that after joining the exhibition, some new artists “can think more about having their own solo exhibition”, hoping that they will have a chance to exhibit more of their works in Macau and elsewhere.

The gallery is located on the ground floor of the Macau Cultural Centre (CCM). Those interested can visit the gallery from Mondays to Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
