The Judiciary Police (PJ) warned members of the public to stay vigilant to fraudsters pretending to be school staff personnel or class teachers in group chats in communication software, according to a PJ statement released yesterday.

The Judiciary Police have received reports from residents that some fraudsters got into the home-school contact chat groups in mobile phone communication software, with their user icons and account names being the same as those of class teachers or school staff personnel, pretending to be staff members and collecting various fees from parents, the statement said.

The fraudsters even used another account to pretend to be a “parent” to enquire about the payment method, and take the lead in completing the payment before demonstrating and teaching other parents how to make the payment, in order to defraud parents of their money, the statement said.

Schools are advised to adopt contact software with encryption and identity authentication features, and to set up a requirement for approval by the school to enter the group, and parents and students should not invite strangers claiming to be their classmates or parents to join the group before verifying their identity, the statement said.
