A 65-year-old local businesswoman told the police on Tuesday that she had been cheated out of HK$12,070,000 by a mainland 'cop' in a phone scam, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Choi Ian Fai said yesterday during a regular press briefing.
Choi said the woman received a phone call from someone who claimed to be a mainland policeman when she was in Hong Kong in November. The “policeman” told her that more than 200 fake identity cards were found in a package sent in the woman’s name, and that she was suspected of being a member of a criminal organisation.
According to Choi, the call was then transferred to another person who claimed to be a prosecutor and later sent her a link to a photo purportedly showing that she was wanted by the police.
