A woman from the mainland, who has overstayed in Macau for three years and eight months, has been arrested for stealing HK$150,000 from a male friend’s hotel guestroom safe, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chong Kam Leong told reporters at a regular press conference yesterday.

The 61-year-old suspect, surnamed Gu, told the police that she’s jobless. The elderly victim had met Gu a year ago while gambling in a casino and had since been inviting her again and again to gamble with him and stay in his hotel guestroom.

The victim arrived in Macau on August 24 and again invited Gu to join him in a guestroom at a Cotai hotel.

On Friday, upon the victim’s return to his room after attending to some private matters, he discovered that HK$150,000 cash he had put in his hotel safe had vanished. Neither was Gu in the room, prompting the victim to report the case to the police.

The police located and arrested the suspect in another guestroom of the same hotel. Under questioning, she admitted to the theft. Police found the stolen money and casino chips in her room.

Gu was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) on Monday, facing an aggravated theft charge, according to Chong.
