A Filipino non-resident worker (NRW) has been arrested for stealing a smartphone left on a staircase, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Kong Chi Ian said at a regular press conference yesterday.
The suspect surnamed Patubo is in his forties. He is a worker.
According to Kong, the Public Security Police received a report from a local man last Monday saying that he had inadvertently left a phone worth 10,000 patacas on a staircase on Avenida de Venceslau de Morais in the early hours of August 25. He only became aware of the loss at noon that day, returned to the staircase, where he found that it had disappeared.
The police checked the CCTV footage around the area and discovered that Patubo had picked up the phone. He was intercepted in a building nearby on Thursday.
Under questioning, Patubo admitted to stealing the phone out of greed. He told the police that the phone was in his flat.
Patubo has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft-by-finding charge.
