A flat on the ninth floor of a residential building on Estrada da Vitória, opposite the Traffic Police headquarters, caught fire at around 1 a.m. yesterday, the Fire Services Bureau (CB) said in a statement.
Several fire engines, ambulances and police vehicles rushed to the scene.
Firefighters found smoke coming from an air conditioner in the flat and promptly extinguished it. According to the statement, firefighters said they believed that the blaze was likely caused by a malfunction in the A/C unit.
The walls of the flat were blackened by the blaze. The statement said that about 90 people self-evacuated during the incident, underlining that no one was injured or required hospitalisation.
