Integrated resort (IR) operator MGM’s two-day “11th International Lion Dance Championship 2024 – MGM Cup” concluded yesterday, with winning teams across the competition’s four categories announced.

The “Lion Dance Troupe of Qiaotou, Fuhai, Shenzhen, China” took home the top prize in the “Freestyle Lion Dance Championship”, while the “MGM Golden Lion Troupe – A” won the “Women’s Traditional Lion Dance Championship”. Meanwhile, the “Macau Lo Leong Sport General Association” team emerged as the winners in the “Youth Traditional Lion Dance Championship”, while Mak Chi Leong Dragon & Lion Dance Association Macau won the “Junior Traditional Lion Dance Championship”.

The competition, which according to an MGM statement last night attracted 60,000 on-site visits, featured 33 competitions held in Barra district in front of A-Ma Temple, marking the second year that the event was held at the venue.

This year’s competition comprised 21 lion dance troupes from 13 countries and regions, with MGM’s Brand Marketing Senior Vice President Catarina Lio (廖頴琦) telling the Post after the event that there were many more competitors this year than previously. Moreover, this edition also saw more female teams and teenagers taking part in the event, according to Lio.

Lio added that last year’s competition at A-Ma Temple had also generated awareness of the competition area among teams from different parts of the world, noting that they found it to be “amazing”.
