HONG KONG – John Lee Ka-chiu, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), has congratulated Sam Hou Fai on being elected as the sixth-term chief executive of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) today.

Lee noted in a statement that Sam had served as the president of Macau’s Court of Final Appeal (TUI) since the establishment of the MSAR, leading Macau’s various levels of courts in performing their judicial functions and contributing significantly to the long-term prosperity and stability of Macau. Lee underlined that Sam has been dedicated to serving Macao over the years and made immense contributions.

Lee congratulated Sam on being elected as the sixth-term chief executive of the MSAR, wishing him success in leading Macao to new heights again.

Lee pointed out that Hong Kong and Macau enjoy close geographical ties and share the same cultural roots. The two places share deep bonds and affinity with frequent people-to-people and cultural exchanges, alongside solid economic and trade relations.

As the country's two SARs, both Hong Kong and Macao will stay committed to the basis of "One Country" while leveraging the benefits of "Two Systems", Lee said, adding that as participants in and beneficiaries of the country's reform and opening up, Hong Kong and Macau enjoy the advantages of "One Country, Two Systems", and can directly tap into the huge markets of the mainland, while staying connected to the world.

Lee also said Hong Kong and Macau are both core cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) and engines for regional development. He said that he has every confidence in working closely with Sam in the future to achieve complementarity and mutual benefits for Hong Kong and Macau, giving full play to the cities' strengths to serve the country's needs and making new and greater contributions to building the nation into a great modern state and achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Sam is slated to become Macau’s next chief executive on December 20, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of Macau’s return to the motherland. Macau's chief executive-elect will become its chief executive-designate after receiving his formal appointment certificate from the State Council in Beijing in due course.
