The 2nd Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area Collective Management of Copyright in Music Works Forum took place at the Galaxy International Convention Centre (GICC) in Cotai on Thursday, during which Wan Sucheng, director of the Department of Publicity and Culture of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macau, pointed out the important attributes and status of the collective copyright management organisations to promote the progress and development of cultural and scientific undertakings and to satisfy the spiritual and cultural needs of the people.

“Collective copyright management organisations, as a bridge between rights holders and users, play an essential role in promoting the effective dissemination of works, advancing the development of cultural and scientific undertakings, and meeting the spiritual and cultural needs of the public,” Wan said in his opening remarks at the forum, adding that protecting intellectual property rights is protecting innovation.

Jointly organised by the Music Copyright Society of China (MCSC), Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong Limited (CASH), and Macao Association of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (MACA), with the support of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC), a ceremony for “Copyright Ignites Creativity” was held, the first of its kind in the GBA, with the support and guidance of the National Copyright Administration, during Thursday’s forum to raise public awareness of copyright protection in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau and to enhance the reach of copyright promotion efforts.

The one-day forum, themed “Artificial Intelligence and the Internet Era: Challenges and Opportunities for Creators”, was divided into two parts and featured discussions on important issues from the perspectives of music creators and experts and scholars, such as the significant value achieved in music creation, the protection provided by collective management organisations for music creators, and the impact of AI and the internet era on music creation.
