Tropical Storm Trami may affect Macau between tomorrow afternoon and Friday morning, the weather bureau said yesterday, adding that “SMG will issue the tropical cyclone warning signal [No.1] accordingly”.

“Trami is expected to enter within 800 kilometres of Macau between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, moving generally towards Hainan Island,” the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) noted on its website yesterday, warning the public about an expected drop in temperature in the coming few days, which, according to a SMG statement on Monday, could be as low as 20 degrees Celsius later in the week.

The bureau also reminded the public of the big difference in temperature between day and night under the influence of a northeast monsoon: “The temperature will drop in the next few days, and it will be slightly cooler in the morning and evening”.

According to Monday’s statement, the bureau then expects Trami in the northwestern Pacific to gradually strengthen over the next few days and move roughly east of the Philippines, with a possibility of entering the South China Sea or moving closer to Taiwan later this week. The statement added that autumn typhoons are subject to a high degree of uncertainty as they are heavily influenced by the interplay of different weather systems.

At about 9 p.m. yesterday, Trami was gathering in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, about 1,560 kilometres southeast of Macau, and moving north-westward at a speed of about 15 kilometres per hour.
