A couple from the mainland have been arrested for stealing a purse that they found on the street, Public Security Police (PSP) spokeswoman Lai In Hong said at a regular press conference yesterday.
The female suspect is surnamed Chen and the male suspect is surnamed Zhao. Both are in their forties and they came to Macau as visitors with their children.
According to Lai, the police received a report from a local woman on Saturday saying that she had lost her purse containing 2,000 patacas and her identity documents in a bakery on Avenida de D. João IV (約翰四世大馬路).
After scrutinising their citywide CCTV camera system, the police identified Zhao as the suspect who had picked up the purse and intercepted the family later that day near Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro (新馬路).
The purse was recovered with all its contents intact, except for 700 patacas that the couple had spent on food.
The couple have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing theft-by-finding charges, Lai said.
