Two men from mainland China have been separately apprehended for engaging in an illegal currency exchange transaction, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chong Kam Leong said during a special press conference yesterday.

According to Chong’s report about the first case, PJ officers saw the suspect, a 31-year-old surnamed Jiang involved in an illegal currency exchange deal with a mainland male gambler in a Cotai casino lobby on Sunday. After the gambler transferred 28,500 yuan by scanning the QR code provided by Jiang, he handed the gambler HK$30,000 in gambling chips.

The duo were intercepted on the spot. The police seized HK$ 215,000 in cash and HK$10,000 worth of chips from Jiang.

In the second case, the 35-year-old suspect is surnamed Chen.

According to Chong, a security guard of a Cotai casino discovered Chen engaging in an illegal currency exchange deal with another man in a toilet, and reported the case to the police.

Subsequently, the PJ officers seized HK$37,000 in casino chips from the victim, which had been exchanged with Chen during the transaction.

The two suspects have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing illegal currency exchange charges, Chong said.
