The Public Security Police (PSP) have apprehended six suspects for allegedly making false statements and their involvement in sham marriages, PSP spokesman Wong Wai Chon said yesterday.

The case involves a complex web of deceit, Wong said. In one instance, a mainland couple in their fifties, the wife surnamed Li and the husband surnamed Shi, had a son and a daughter. The couple then asked Shi’s female cousin and her husband to falsely claim to be the parents of their daughter to secure a Macau ID card for her.

Subsequently, in 2011, Shi engaged in a sham marriage with a local woman surnamed Wong to obtain a Macau ID card for himself and his son. They divorced in 2014.

Meanwhile, Wong entered into a legitimately registered marriage with a mainland man named Hu in 2016, enabling Hu to obtain a family visitor permit for frequent visits to Macau. Despite their separation in 2022 and no longer residing together, Hu continued to use the family permit to enter Macau regularly.

Under questioning, all suspects insisted that their actions involved no financial transactions but were merely acts of mutual assistance.

The sextet have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of engaging in a sham marriage and making false statements to the authorities, Wong said.
