Interview by William Chan, Rui Pastorin
Filipino band Lola Amour performed on Sunday at “hush! Beach Concerts x Urban Yo~ga Wellfest 2024” at Hac Sa Beach in Coloane.
The Post published an exclusive interview* with the band on Thursday.
Lola Amour, a group of seven musicians who came together in high school, have turned their hobby into a professional endeavour. Their music, which blends elements of pop/rock with a touch of funk, defies a specific genre. Over the past seven years, the band has garnered popularity with their relatable lyrics and charismatic personalities. Their tracks “Fallen” and “Raining in Manila” have seen significant success, with the latter reaching #1 on digital streaming platforms in the Philippines and making waves internationally.
Jan Gresil Kahambing, a Filipino student currently studying at the University of Macau (UM), expressed his delight to the Post after the performance, highlighting the band’s playlist which included tracks like “Namimiss Ko Na,” “Valerie,” “Saan Kakapit,” “Part II: Bliss,” “If I Ever Come Back,” “Fallen,” and “Raining in Manila.”
He emphasised the emotional depth of “Raining in Manila,” describing it as a poignant reflection on longing, separation, and the challenges of communication depicted through a rainstorm—a metaphor for obstacles. “The lyrics convey a sense of Filipinos abroad pursuing their aspirations while yearning for a connection to their roots.” The song struck a chord with the audience, particularly Filipino nationals present at the beach, evoking tears and overwhelming responses. The performance garnered one of the largest audiences at hush!, with attendees passionately reacting to the band members, visibly moving and surprising them on stage. Lead singer and guitarist Pio Dumayas pledged on stage that Lola Amour would undoubtedly return to Macau in the future.
Post-performance, the Post conducted a backstage interview with Lola Amour. They said that this marked the band’s second international appearance, expressing their astonishment at the crowd’s energetic reception, transforming the event into an unforgettable memory.
Dumayas reflected on their Macau experience, praising the city’s culinary offerings and vibrant atmosphere, especially noting the presence of many Filipino nationals. He expressed gratitude that the show proceeded despite the threat of a typhoon. “We will also be visiting the Philippine Consulate-General in Macau on Monday,” he added.
Additionally, Dumayas hinted at forthcoming releases from the band and expressed their eagerness to revisit Macau with new music in the pipeline.
