The Judiciary Police have separately arrested a man from the mainland and a local man for engaging in illegal currency exchange transactions, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Lou Chan Fai said during a special press conference yesterday.

In the first case, the local male, identified as Leong who worked as a casino shuttle bus driver, offered an illegal currency exchange deal to a male gambler at a Cotai casino on Tuesday, at a rate of HK$1 to 0.96 yuan. After the gambler transferred 9,600 yuan by scanning the QR code provided by Leong, he handed him HK$10,000 in cash.

Leong and the gambler were apprehended on the spot. The police confiscated the HK$10,000 cash from the gambler, who then turned witness in the case, as well as HK$35,000 in casino chips from the suspect.

In the second case, a mainland man surnamed Lu was arrested for a similar offence. From him, police confiscated HK$22,000 in cash, along with HK$20,000 from a gambler he struck his illegal exchange deal with at a Cotai casino on Tuesday.

The two suspects have been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing illegal currency exchange charges, Lou said.
