Former Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) director and previous coordinator of the Macau Grand Prix (MGP) João Manuel Costa Antunes will be the speaker at Thursday’s “Talk at Sunset” presented by the International Advertising Association Macao China (IAA Macao).
Costa Antunes’ talk, entitled “Macao Grand Prix: Beyond the Races”, slated to take place at Artyzen Grand Lapa Macau’s Vasco Bar on Thursday evening, will delve into how the MGP “serves as a catalyst for Macau’s global development and its impact on the region’s tourism landscape”, according to an IAA statement yesterday.
The statement said that Costa Antunes, who was born in Lisbon and moved to Macau in 1983, is a distinguished figure in Macau’s tourism and public works fields, having headed MGTO from 1988 to 2012, during which he coordinated major cultural and tourism projects such as the Macau International Music Festival and Macau International Fireworks Display Contest. He also played a leading role as MGP coordinator from 1988 to 2015, and he also coordinated the “Handover Ceremonies Office” in 1999, the statement said.
Moreover, Costa Antunes was the vice-president of the Leal Senado (Town Hall), which is now the Macau Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM), and an adviser to Harbour Master’s Office in the 1980s, the statement said.
The statement quoted Costa Antunes as saying: “The Macau Grand Prix is not just a thrilling motorsport event, it is a significant part of our cultural heritage that has evolved over the years. Through this annual spectacular, we have not only showcased the beauty of Macau but also attracted global attention, contributing to the local economy in various sectors, including tourism, hospitality, and entertainment.”
IAA Macao President Rebecca Choi (蔡美寶) was quoted as saying that the Macau Grand Prix is “a unique world-class event that unites communities and attracts global visitors. As a former director of the Macau Government Tourism Office, Antunes has made an indelible impact on Macau’s cultural and tourism landscape”.
