The Judiciary Police (PJ) arrested on Wednesday a non-permanent resident from India for cheating a Southeast Asian man he met in 2021 out of HK$41,000 by claiming he could help him obtain a work visa for the US.
According to a regular police press conference yesterday, the male suspect, aged 39, surnamed Rajinder, met the middle-aged victim in 2021 when he was working as a security guard, and they remained in contact until early this year, when the suspect received HK$41,000 from the victim as “a deposit for a US visa application”.
The victim lost contact with the suspect after transferring the HK$41,000 to him on January 24 and reported the case to the Judiciary Police in October, PJ spokesman Chong Kam Leong said during yesterday’s press conference.
The Judiciary Police arrested on Wednesday the suspect at his home in San Kio district, and he admitted to defrauding the victim so that he could pay his daily expenses and rent.
Rajinder, who told the police that he is currently employed as a part-time driver, was transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) yesterday, facing a fraud charge involving a large sum of money.
