Over a thousand runners joined Tuesday’s “2024 Fourth Round of the Macau Long-Distance Running League: CEM New Year’s Eve Run”, according to a statement by public power utility CEM.
The race started and ended at the Coloane Power Station.
In a speech during the run’s opening ceremony, General Association of Athletics of Macau President Chan Bu Qian said that he was honoured to cooperate with CEM in organising the event, which for his association was very meaningful, introducing new ideas and models, and providing a better platform for future events.
CEM Executive Committee Chairman Bernie Leong Wa Kun said in his speech that 2024 was not only a “dual anniversary year”, but also marked the 40th Anniversary of the Guangdong-Macau Interconnection, making it especially significant.
The statement noted that the event consisted of a race course of around 8.7 kilometres for the Male and Female Youth, Open, Senior, Master, and Invited categories, and approximately 5 kilometres for the Male and Female Junior categories. Invited runners from the power supply sector in other parts of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) were among those taking part in the run.
Moreover, the “Most Creative Costume Award” was up for grabs, offering a Grand Prize of 3,000 patacas in cash and 10 Excellence Awards of 500-pataca supermarket gift vouchers, while exhibition boards and a photo zone were set up to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Guangdong-Macau electricity supply interconnection.
Deputy Director-General of the Department of Social Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau SAR, Zhao Heqing; Sports Bureau (ID) President Luís Gomes and lawmakers Leong Sun Iok and Wu Chou Kit were also among the officiating guests on Tuesday.
