The female owner of a restaurant was defrauded out of HK$40,000 by a duo consisting of a “teacher” and a “food supplier”, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Cheong Kim Fong said at a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Cheong, the owner received a call last week from someone claiming to be a “teacher” of a local school, who requested 400 delivery meals totalling 14,300 patacas. The “teacher” later called back to say they wanted to order 136 servings of a traditional Chinese dish, known as “big bowl feast” (盤菜 – transliterated as “poon choi” in Cantonese). They claimed that the “school” had had a dispute with the “big bowl feast supplier,” preventing them from placing the order directly. The “teacher” even claimed that the meals were intended as a donation to a nursing home.
Cheong noted that the owner agreed to the order and even paid the “supplier” HK$40,000 in advance for the “school.” Afterward, she lost contact with the scammer and subsequently reported the case to the police.
