The Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) has banned the entry of poultry imported from Hungary’s Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county, Portugal’s capital Lisbon, and South Korea’s Jincheon-gun of Chungcheongbuk-do province and Yeoju-si of Gyeonggi-do province, in response to the outbreaks of bird flu there.

According to a statement by the bureau on Tuesday, the import curbs on poultry meat and products from the four regions was imposed in response to notifications from the Ministry of Agriculture of Hungary and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) concerning the outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza.

Currently, Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, the UK and the US are among the bureau’s temporary ban on imports from certain areas in those countries, also due to the avian influenza outbreaks.

In the statement, the bureau underlined that it “will continue to exercise stringent control of live and fresh food products imported for sale in Macau through an effective import inspection and quarantine mechanism”.
