A man from the mainland was arrested on Saturday for knowingly keeping extra cash from a currency exchange deal, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon said in a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Wong, the suspect is surnamed Cai, who is in his fifties and works as a driver.
Wong pointed out that when Cai was exchanging currency at a pawn shop on Saturday at around 11 a.m., he gave a pawn shop employee 776 yuan in exchange for HK$800. The staff member accidentally gave him HK$8,000 instead, and Cai immediately took the HK$8,000 and ran away. The victim could not catch him and promptly reported the case to the police.
The police arrested Cai in a casino in Zape an hour later. Under questioning, Cai admitted that he knew the victim had given him the wrong amount of money. Driven by greed, he took the money and left, and gambled it all away afterwards, he told police.
Cai has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft-by-finding charge.
