A local man was arrested on Saturday for theft by finding, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Cheong Heon Fan said in a regular press conference yesterday.
The suspect surnamed Ieong is in his sixties. He claimed to be jobless.
According to Cheong, the police received a report from a man on Thursday saying that he had left his wallet with 6,800 patacas inside on a shop counter. After scrutinising their citywide CCTV camera system, the police identified Ieong as the suspect who had picked up the wallet and intercepted him at the Barrier Gate checkpoint.
Under questioning, Ieong admitted to stealing the wallet out of greed. The police retrieved the wallet from his backpack, with all the cash still inside.
Ieong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft by finding charge, according to Cheong.
