Following the installation of diagonal crossings at the junction of Rua Nova da Areia Preta (黑沙環新街) and Rua de Ma Kau Seak (馬交石街), two more junctions have been provided with multidirectional crosswalks in the northern district, which started operating on Saturday morning.
According to a statement by the Transport Bureau (DSAT) on Saturday, the relevant arrangement was made in the wake of a traffic accident at the junction of Avenida da Longevidade (長壽大馬路) and Rua da Tribuna (看台街) last Monday, in which a 19-year-old secondary school student was run over by a public bus, sustaining a severe leg injury.
The statement noted that having assessed the factors of the road conditions and vehicular traffic pressure at Avenida da Longevidade, Rua da Tribuna and Avenida do Hipódromo (馬場大馬路) and after communication with the schools concerned, the bureau, taking into account the existing pedestrian traffic signals, set up additional diagonal crossing facilities at the junctions with the aim of further optimising the crossing environment and safeguarding pedestrian safety there.
The statement said that now 10 signalised junctions in Macau have been equipped with diagonal crossings, of which three started operating earlier this month.
