During a regular press conference yesterday, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Cheong Heon Fan announced a theft case, in which a man from the mainland stole cash and a phone from a supermarket locker.
According to Cheong, the victim, an employee of a supermarket on Rua de Santo António
(花王堂街), reported to the police on Friday that 1,400 patacas in cash and a phone valued at 1,800 patacas had been stolen from his shoulder bag, which he had placed in a locker in the supermarket’s warehouse.
Using CCTV footage, the police identified the suspect as a man surnamed Zhang, in his forties, who was apprehended on Saturday at the Horta da Mitra Municipal Market (雀仔園街市).
Under questioning, Zhang admitted to visiting the supermarket but denied stealing anything there.
The investigation revealed that the flat where Zhang and two other mainlanders stayed was a suspected illegal inn, with daily rents ranging from 150 to 300 patacas. Zhang claimed he rented his room from an acquaintance he met in a casino.
Cheong added that the police had notified the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) for further action and were seeking the whereabouts of the flat’s owner at the time of the press conference.
Zhang has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a theft charge, according to Cheong.
