Four members of the government-appointed Northern Districts Social Services Consultative Committee expressed their concerns over the preservation of Ilha Verde Hill yesterday, urging the government to take action to preserve the bucolic hillock as soon as possible.

Committee member Cheong Ka Man pointed out at the start of the closed-door meeting, before journalists were asked to leave, at the Government Service Centre in Areia Preta that there are centuries-old trees and an old monastery on the hill, urging the government to promote ecotourism or a heritage tour of the hill by setting up a walking trail.

Cheong pointed out that many elderly and grassroots residents live in Ilha Verde. “Public space is in high demand… [I] suggest the government develop Ilha Verde Hill into a municipal park,” Cheong said.
