The Pharmaceutical Supervision and Administration Bureau (ISAF) said in a statement yesterday that Batch No. UD04 of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) “Huang Lien Chieh Tu Pill ‘S.F’”, produced by Taiwan-based Taiwan Three Mast Pharmaceutical Limited, has been recalled from the local market as it has a bacterial content exceeding the limit of the registration criteria.
The product, which is used to treat dry mouth, dry throat, haematuria (the presence of blood in the urine), constipation and facial blisters, was found to contain an excessive amount of moulds and yeasts, the statement noted.
According to the information provided by the importer, the affected batches of the products have been supplied to community pharmacies, traditional Chinese medicine shops and polyclinics in Macau.
The bureau urged local pharmacies to stop selling the problematic product, the statement said, adding that local pharmacies have been notified by their respective drug importers to remove the medicine from their shelves.
The statement stressed that the bureau is paying close attention to the matter, adding that residents who obtain the medicine from their neighbourhood pharmacies may consult their attending physician or pharmacist for “proper handling of the drug”.
