Macau’s population fell year on year by 1,900 to 644,900 at the end of last year, namely due to a decrease in the number of imported labour, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) announced yesterday.

According to the bureau’s 2016 demographic data, females accounted for 52.6 percent of the population. Seniors – those aged 65 and over – accounted for 9.8 percent of the population. The elderly population rose by 0.8 percent year on year.

A total of 7,146 live births were delivered last year, 91 more than in the previous year. The birth rate remained unchanged at 11 percent.
