A local woman has lost HK$894,000 (919,930 patacas) in a “fake police” scam, Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chao Teng Hin said in a regular press conference yesterday.
According to Chao, a local young woman received a call on March 9 from someone claiming to be a “Shanghai police officer”, The “police officer” alleged that her mainland-registered phone had sent out a large number of scam messages and requested she contact a “prosecutor” through FaceTime. The woman booked a room at an inn in the northern district as instructed by the “prosecutor” and enabled screen sharing for “funds inspection”.
The victim later discovered that she could not log into her online banking account. After consulting her bank, she discovered that eight transactions amounting to a total of HK$894,000 had been transferred from her account between March 10 and 14 to four different Hong Kong accounts. She realised finally that she had been defrauded and reported the case to the police on Friday.
