The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) forecasts that this year’s typhoon season will begin in June or later and end in October or later, during which Macau is expected to be affected by five to eight tropical cyclones, adding that the expected number of this year’s tropical cyclones will be normal to relatively high.

An SMG statement on Saturday said that some of this year’s expected tropical cyclones may reach the level of a strong typhoon or higher.

The statement also said that the bureau predicts that the average temperature during this year’s rainy season, i.e., between April and September, will be normal to relatively high, while cumulative precipitation will be normal, but with the possibility of periods of extremely heavy rainfall.

The statement also said that under the general trend of global warming, Macau’s average annual temperature last year stood at 23.6 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest year on record, alongside 2019, since 1952 when official meteorological data began to be available.

The statement noted that a rare phenomenon occurred in November last year, during which a total of four tropical cyclones formed in the northwest Pacific Ocean, three of which entered the South China Sea and affected Macau, setting a record for three tropical cyclones impacting Macau for the first time in November.

This image released by the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) on Saturday shows its forecast of five to eight tropical cyclones for this year, as well as a normal to relatively high temperatures between April and September.
