A knife attack occurred yesterday afternoon at the China Telecom shop on Rua do Campo, resulting in two staff members sustaining injuries, including one with a neck injury – and the Judiciary Police (PJ) later identified the suspect as a local man believed to have mental health issues.

According to the Fire Services Bureau (CB), two male staff members in their twenties sustained injuries to their neck and left arm respectively. They were taken to the public Conde de São Januário Hospital Centre and the private Kiang Wu Hospital, respectively. One of the victims experienced a decrease in alertness while being rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. The Judiciary Police released a statement last night, saying that neither of the two victims have life-threatening conditions.

At about 5 p.m. yesterday, according to the PJ statement, the suspect, who is in his forties, suddenly rushed into the telecom shop and attacked two male staff members with a fruit knife, threatening and forcing them to retreat to the shop’s office. During the attack, another staff member, who had rushed down from the shop’s mezzanine floor, seized the opportunity to close the office door while the suspect was still threatening them, inadvertently trapping the knife between the office door and the door frame.

The Judiciary Police noted that the suspect had started to loiter outside the shop at around at 4 p.m., adding that after leaving the shop following the attack, he remained outside until Public Security Police (PSP) officers arrived and restrained him.
