Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai has sent today a message of sympathy to Myanmar’s leader Min Aung Hlaing, expressing his deepest sorrow regarding those affected in the disaster caused by yesterday's massive earthquake, the Macau Government Information Bureau (GCS) has announced.

According to the statement, Sam said in the message he’s deeply saddened to learn of the devastating earthquake in Myanmar, which has caused great destruction, heavy casualties, significant loss of property, and extensive damage to infrastructure, greatly impacting the lives of the people there.

On behalf of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) Government and its residents, Sam conveyed his deepest condolences regarding the situation involving the victims, and sincere sympathies to the families of the bereaved, the injured, and all those affected by the disaster. Sam also expressed the greatest respect for the rescue personnel working tirelessly on the ongoing relief efforts.

Macau and Myanmar share a long-standing friendship and close people-to-people ties, Sam noted. In this difficult time, “the people of Macau stand in solidarity with Myanmar, and show deep concern about the disaster and about the affected communities, and are closely following the progress of rescue operations,” the statement quoted Sam as saying. “Macau is ready to provide all possible assistance to support Myanmar’s disaster relief and post-earthquake reconstruction efforts,” Sam added.

Sam extended his good wishes to the injured for a speedy recovery, and to the affected areas, hoping that they will quickly overcome the effects of the disaster, return to normal life, and rebuild the homeland for the better.

According to data from Macau’s Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL), at the end of January 4,382 Myanmar nationals had non-resident workers status in Macau. Thousands of returned overseas Chinese and their locally born offspring live in Macau, whose multiethnic gastronomy includes Myanmar cuisine.
