A 48-year-old man from the mainland was caught red-handed on Thursday while attempting to illegally enter Macau using an electronic swimming kickboard, according to a statement from the Macau Customs Service (SA) on Saturday.

In response to International Workers’ Day, the Macau Customs Service strengthened its maritime and coastal operations to prevent and combat illegal activities. On Thursday, a customs patrol boat in Cheoc Van (竹灣) spotted the man as he was attempting to swim toward the Macau coast using an electronic swimming kickboard. Suspecting illegal immigration activity, the customs officers intercepted him and brought him ashore for further investigation. The customs officers discovered that the man is currently banned from entering Macau.

He has been transferred to the Correctional Services Bureau (DSC), charged with entering Macau without going through immigration control procedures. He has been sentenced to five months behind bars.
