An exhibition titled ‘Déjà Vu’, is on at Creative Macau and will run until next Thursday.
The free-admission exhibition, according to a recent Creative Macau statement, features the work of local lensman António Leong, who says that he has nurtured a life-long passion for photography.
The statement mentioned that the series emphasises the role of photography as a document of reality, and how various perspectives shape the look of an image. Leong’s series documents the intricate details of Macau’s structures and the mundane interactions of its people, the statement pointed out, adding that his photographs evoke a sense of nostalgia and discovery, presenting both fleeting and static moments that appeal to the city’s character.
According to the statement, Leong’s work invites viewers to engage in dialogues not only with the photographs, but with their own memories of Macau.
The statement highlighted that déjà vu* is the recurring theme of the exhibition. Through Leong’s lens, exhibitiongoers are invited to experience moments that echo the past, bringing forth a sense of nostalgia that is palpable in his black-and-white photographs. These silent narratives capture the essence of what has transpired in Macau over the past few years, allowing viewers to connect with the familiar in new and profound ways.
In the statement, Leong highlighted his artistic intent: “Each photograph in this collection has captivated my attention for extended periods, inspiring a profound sense of wonder and calm.” He added” “The lines, shapes, and silhouettes aim to convey the otherworldly nature of these subjects within the context of our contemporary world.”
His work invites us to reflect on the connections between the viewer, the city, and the memories that shape our perceptions of both.
The exhibition is open from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday to Saturday. It is closed on Sundays and public holidays.
*In French, déjà vu literally translated means “already seen”, referring to the strange feeling that one has experienced something before, even though it’s actually happening for the first time. – DeepSeek
