Hong Kong’s “Ging Sun Ho King of Bun” brand has made its Macau debut, with a shop now set up at The Venetian Macao’s food court.

Known for “breathing new life into traditional Shanghainese comfort food”, the brand started off as a 100 square foot (9.3 square metre) shop in Mong Kok in 2010, rebranding it to “Ging Sun Ho King of Bun*” in 2019, according to a statement from the brand. The company now has 12 outlets in Hong Kong, along with one in Singapore that opened last year.

Macau marks its newest location, with the brand bringing with it delicacies like its signature “bite and burst” Pan-Fried Pork Soup Buns and the Ging Sun Ho Dan Dan Noodles, among others, to the local market.

During the opening event held at the integrated resort yesterday, founder Oscar Siu (蕭唯展) told the Post that prior to the brand’s founding in 2010, he and his co-founder travelled to Shanghai to learn how to make pan-fried buns, along with other Shanghai cooking methods, in 2008, taking on an apprenticeship.

Now marking 15 years, Siu, a former singer, said that he was excited to have a branch in Macau, which he described as one of his favourite destinations to visit, frequently travelling here, especially for special occasions like birthdays, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. And when the border restrictions eased, he said that Macau was the first place he visited again.

Their Macau branch, Siu added, is located in a place that has not only locals but also travellers from all over the world. He noted that it was the right decision to open a branch in Macau, adding he hopes to bring Ging Sun Ho’s  delicacies to people in the city.

Among the best-selling dishes that Siu said he recommends the most are the signature juicy pan-fried buns, the dan dan** noodles, which feature a special sauce made by Siu and his team, along with their special take on chicken veggie rice.

The shop is located on Level 3 of The Venetian Macao and, according to the brand’s official website, is open from 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

*The brand’s Chinese name is “堅信號上海生煎皇”. Literally translated, it means “Firmly Believe in Shanghai Pan-Fried Bun King”.

** AI chatbot Poe notes that “dan dan” noodles, a popular Sichuan dish known for their bold flavours and spicy kick, got their name from the traditional way that they were sold by street vendors, who carried them on poles (dan) over their shoulders.
