The public University of Macau (UM) said in a statement on Tuesday that applications are now being accepted for its 39th Portuguese Language Summer Programme, organised by the Department of Portuguese within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

According to the statement, the application deadline is June 20, anyone aged at least 15 welcome to apply. The programme is an initiative aimed at fostering “bilingual talent”, the statement said.

The statement noted that the programme is scheduled to run from July 10-30. There will be 60 study hours overall, with all classes running from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The programme will feature a variety of language courses, themed classes, and cultural workshops aimed at improving participants’ Portuguese language skills, as well as their sociolinguistic, pragmatic, and sociocultural knowledge, while also promoting intercultural awareness.

The language courses will be structured according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), with four levels: Basic (A1), Elementary (A2), Intermediate (B1 to B2), and Advanced (B2 to C1), the statement said. Participants will be assigned to the most suitable level based on their results from a placement test.

Participants will also participate in 15 hours of “guided self-study” in addition to the standard language classes. The curriculum will include sessions on grammar and vocabulary in addition to covering fundamental abilities like speaking, writing, and listening, the statement said, on topics like history and literature in the themed classes. There will also be “evening clubs”.

According to the statement, all participants will get free textbooks and additional resources for their language classes and cultural events.

The statement highlighted that a certificate outlining their course performance will be given to those who attend at least 80 percent of the classes. More information is available on the UM website.

For local students or those enrolled in a local university the fee amounts to 3,000 patacas, including textbooks and course materials
