A local man was arrested on Saturday for driving under the influence of drugs and evading responsibility, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Wong identified the suspect as a professional driver surnamed Leong in his thirties.
According to Wong, the police received a report early Saturday morning about a car accident on Avenida da Amizade (友誼大馬路). Upon arriving at the scene, police officers found Leong in a trance-like state, with a dull expression and unable to respond to questions. Suspecting Leong of drug use, the police took him to a hospital where he tested positive for ketamine in a urine test.
Wong noted that the police seized two packets of powdered drugs from Leong, one of which contained white powder wrapped in paper weighing 3.2 grams including the wrapping, while the other was a combination of pills and white powder wrapped in toilet paper weighing 3.85 grams including the wrapping. Additionally, a straw with white powder was found in the car. The police also confiscated at the suspect’s flat a paper bag containing powdered drugs weighing 14 grams including the bag. Wong mentioned that while the specific composition of the drugs was still under examination, they have been confirmed to be prohibited drugs.
Under questioning, Leong admitted to driving after taking drugs around 11:56 p.m. on Friday; however, he denied using drugs habitually, claiming that he took the drugs only because he was feeling unwell. He also told police that while driving along Avenida 1 de Maio (勞動節大馬路), he hit the kerb several times on both sides of the flyover. After going down the flyover towards Avenida da Amizade (友誼大馬路), he crossed in to the opposite lane and eventually collided with an metal railing. Using the citywide CCTV surveillance system, the police confirmed the details of the accident.
Leong has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) and is facing charges of drug use, possession of drugs paraphernalia, drug driving, and evasion of responsibility.
