A local man was arrested on Saturday for threatening others with a cleaver and damaging property, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Wong identified the suspect as a male surnamed Ng who is in his sixties and told the police that he’s jobless.

According to Wong, the police received a report on Wednesday from the owner of a beverage shop in Pátio da Fortuna (福華里). The owner said that Ng was holding a cleaver while shouting, insulting and threatening to harm the shop’s employees.

The owner told the police that Ng was upset about a no-smoking sign the latter had posted on shop’s outer wall that had been removed by someone and he was also displeased with people smoking at the shop’s entrance, which is close to his residential building’s entrance. Ng then returned to his nearby flat to get a cleaver from the kitchen before returning to the shop. He then threatened the staff and damaged the interior decorations of the shop. The owner estimated the repair costs to be 6,000 patacas.

Using surveillance footage, the police identified Ng and apprehended him at his flat. The police confiscated the cleaver, which has a blade length of 19.5 cm and a total length of 29.7 cm. Under questioning, Ng admitted to returning to the shop with the cleaver because he was dissatisfied with the no-smoking sign having been ripped down off the wall and customers smoking near the entrance to his building. However, he denied making verbal threats, only admitting to insulting the staff and damaging items with the cleaver.

Ng has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing charges of illegal possession of a weapon, intimidation, and property damage.
