A woman from China’s Taiwan region was arrested on Monday for theft by finding after stealing a scarf worth 4,000 yuan that had been left on a chair, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Wong Wai Chon said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Wong identified the suspect as a woman surnamed Wu, who works in finance and is in her forties.
According to Wong, the Public Security Police (PSP) received a report on Sunday evening from a mainland woman who claimed that her scarf, valued at 4,000 yuan, had gone missing. She had left the scarf on a chair at a hotel in Cotai and returned two hours later to look for it but was unable to find it. Suspecting that someone had stolen the scarf, she reported the case to the police.
Wong noted that through citywide CCTV surveillance and footage from the hotel, the police identified Wu as the suspect and arrested her on Monday in her hotel guestroom.
Under questioning, Wu admitted to stealing the scarf out of greed and handed the scarf to police.
Wu has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of theft by finding.
