The Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) announced on its website last night that there was a “medium” probability for the Strong Wind Signal No.3 to be hoisted today.
The local observatory said last night that tropical storm “Wutip” (“Butterfly” in Cantonese) in the central South China Sea was moving west-northwest towards Hainan Province.
The weather station said that as “Wutip” was expected to remain approximately 600 kilometres from Macau while approaching Hainan Island, it concluded that there was a “medium” probability that it needed to hoist the Strong Wind Signal No.3 today, unless Macau would continue to be significantly affected by the tropical storm’s outer rainbands and strong winds, in which case the probability of hoisting the Signal No. 3 signal would be “higher than medium”.
The bureau also said that “Wutip” was forecast to turn north northeast tomorrow, moving closer to the western coast of Guangdong Province, adding that the tropical storm’s associated southwest airflow would affect Macau, with the most significant impact anticipated from late tomorrow to early Sunday, during which frequent heavy showers and thunderstorms were expected, bringing high cumulative rainfall. The city’s low-lying areas may be affected by flooding due to prolonged rainfall, the bureau said.
