The Post & Telecommunication Bureau (CTT) announced in a statement on Friday that with the aim of encouraging more organisations to join its “FreeWiFi.MO”* initiative, it held an awards ceremony for the initiative to recognise organisations that provide convenient free Wi-Fi services for residents and tourists alike.
The statement noted that the ceremony was held on Friday afternoon at the Communications Museum (CMM). The bureau presented certificates of appreciation to representatives of all participating organisations and awarded prizes to 11 outstanding organisations in the programme.
CTT Director Derby Lau Wai Meng noted in a speech during the ceremony that since its launch in late 2017, the “FreeWiFi.MO” initiative has garnered support from organisations across various sectors. The number of participating organisations has grown from an initial four to the current 74, while service points have increased from about 280 to 587. Additionally, an additional 100 ride-hailing taxis will join the “FreeWiFi.MO” programme today.
Lau pointed out that the service points now cover government venues, tourist attractions, public transport hubs, commercial establishments, hotels, and other locations, demonstrating the programme’s steady progress. Moving forwards, Lau said her bureau will continue to deploy diverse strategies to raise public awareness and encourage broader participation in the initiative. She pointed out the aim was to motivate more organisations to join the effort, collectively building a more convenient and efficient free Wi-Fi network across Macau.
According to the statement, during the event, representatives from the awarded organisations shared the latest applications of Wi-Fi in driving development overall, as well as their different experiences in participating in the programme. Friday’s one-day event, the statement underlined, strengthened collaboration among the participating organisations, provided fresh insights into expanding Wi-Fi services, and collectively advanced the future growth of the “FreeWiFi.MO” initiative.
