Health Bureau (SSM) Director Lei Chin Ion said yesterday that the government’s newly proposed standards for smoking lounges are “practical” for casino operations while also protecting the health of casino workers.

Lei made the remarks when speaking to reporters after attending a closed-door meeting of the legislature’s 2nd Standing Committee, which is reviewing the Tobacco Prevention and Control Law’s amendment bill article-by-article.

The committee’s president, indirectly-elected lawmaker Andrew Chan Chak Mo, told reporters after a meeting of the committee last week that the government had amended the draft version of the amendment bill, proposing to allow the city’s casinos to set up smoking lounges in their gaming areas in line with new standards set by the government.
