Zhao Wei, the outgoing rector of the University of Macau (UM), said yesterday he hoped his successor will take the university in a new direction, adding he believed the university’s mission of a UM graduate eventually becoming Macau’s chief executive will be achieved.

According to a UM statement last week, Zhao will quit his post at the university when his contract expires in 2018. The statement said Zhao had recently notified UM University Council Chairman Peter Lam Kam Seng of his decision to step down after a decade at the helm of the public university.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the Career and Internship Fair 2017 at the UM Guest House, Zhao noted he has been in his current post for 10 years, adding he hoped that his successor will “take the university up a notch.
The university is reported to have launched an international recruitment drive for Zhao’s successor.
