Macau Customs nabs smuggler with 1,600 cigarettes in takeaway cartons

The Macau Customs Service announced in a statement on Monday that its officers nabbed a local man on Sunday when he was trying for smuggle 1,600 cigarettes in three takeaway cartons from Zhuhai to Macau.

According to the statement, the suspect is a 63-year-old resident.

The statement said that on Sunday evening, customs officers at the Barrier Gate checkpoint noticed a male passenger acting suspiciously during random inbound inspections. Upon thorough examination, the individual was found to have concealed 1,600 cigarettes in three takeaway cartons in an attempt to evade detection. The seized goods lacked valid import declaration documents, the statement said.

As the suspect has violated the External Trade Law, he faces a fine of 5,000 to 100,000 patacas, according to the statement.
