Integrated resort operator MGM’s residency “Macau 2049” recently won the 2024 Weibo Cultural Tourism IP Award at the 2025 “Weibo Travel Night” hosted by Sina Weibo, the company said in a statement yesterday.
The 2025 “Weibo Travel Night” focused on “cultural tourism
communication power” and “IP content power”, the statement noted, adding that it is an annual flagship event of China’s cultural tourism content.
Blending tradition and modernity, the show was co-created with renowned Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou and presented at MGM Theatre at MGM COTAI.
According to the statement, the show embraces “the creative concept of ‘intangible cultural heritage + technology’, to integrate cutting-edge technologies such as Air Fountain, AI, and biomimetic robots with eight forms of Chinese intangible cultural heritage—Hua’er, Khoomei, Song and Dance of The Miao People, Peking Opera, Yangge, Yi Song, Lion Dance and Storytelling in North Shaanxi”.
The statement said that the show also redefines “the younger generation’s understanding of traditional Chinese culture”, and also leverages Weibo’s “advantages as a social platform to spark widespread user-generated creations and discussions”.
The statement quoted Macau 2049 Executive Producer Catarina Lio (廖頴琦) as saying during her speech at the recent event that “by collaborating with social platforms like Weibo, we adopted youth-orientated and market-savvy approaches to encourage curiosity and engagement with intangible cultural heritage, transforming the performance into a continuously evolving cultural phenomenon”.
The statement noted that the show had previously received the 6th China Cultural Tourism Pioneer Award from the China Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (CAAPA).
