The Public Security Police (PSP) apprehended a local man on Tuesday for drunk driving and evading responsibility, with his blood alcohol concentration standing at 2.7 grams per litre, PSP spokeswoman Cheong Im Sim said during a regular press conference yesterday.

Cheong identified the suspect as a 41-year-old clerk surnamed Lao.

According to Cheong, the Public Security Police (PSP) received a report of a traffic accident near a university dormitory area in Cotai early Tuesday morning. Upon arrival, the police discovered that a barrier belonging to the university was damaged, but there was no sign of the vehicle or driver responsible for the accident. Using the university’s surveillance footage, the police identified and found the car about 600 metres from the accident site, where they found Lao sound asleep inside the car, reeking of alcohol. A breathalyser test confirmed his blood alcohol concentration at 2.7 grams per litre, indicating a drunk-driving offence.

Cheong noted that Lao had driven in the wrong direction twice on Avenida Marginal Flor de Lótus (濱蓮花海濱大馬路) before crashing into the university’s barrier and fleeing the scene.

Under questioning, Lao admitted to drinking alcoholic beverages while dining at a restaurant in a hotel in Cotai before driving. He told the police that he lost consciousness due to the effects of the alcohol and had no recollection of his drunk-driving behaviour.

Lao has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP) and is facing charges of drunk driving and evading responsibility.
