Judiciary Police (PJ) spokesman Chao Teng Hin announced at a press conference yesterday that a local middle-aged woman has fallen victim to an online investment scam, losing HK$113,000 (116,350 patacas).
The press conference was held at Judiciary Police (PJ) headquarters in Zape.
According to Chao, the victim connected with a woman on WhatsApp via a link from a Facebook investment post, who then invited her to a group chat purportedly sharing investment strategies. Subsequently, the victim was instructed to download a purported investment app named INST-SI.
Chao said that beginning on May 26, the woman directed the victim to transfer a total of HK$113,000 in four transactions to two designated Hong Kong bank accounts, purportedly for stock purchases. After transferring the funds, the victim saw a displayed profit of HK$ 30,000 on her app.
The situation escalated on Monday when the woman claimed to have purchased additional stocks for the victim. Growing suspicious, the victim independently verified the claim with the relevant company and discovered the scam, subsequently reporting the case to the PJ office.
