Secretary for Transport and Public Works Raymond Tam Vai Man said yesterday that the local government will discuss with the mainland authorities the possibility of lowering prices of electricity supplied to Macau.

Tam made the remarks when replying to oral interpellations by lawmakers during yesterday’s Q&A session in the legislature’s hemicycle.

Tam also noted that about 90 percent of Macau’s electricity consumption is currently imported from the mainland while about 10 percent is locally generated.

Electricity imported into Macau from the mainland is supplied and transmitted by China Southern Power Grid.

Tam noted that electricity supplied to Macau by China Southern Power Grid is delivered via high voltage electricity transmission thanks to which the mainland is currently able to ensure a stable electricity supply to Macau despite extremely adverse circumstances if any disasters occur.

Tam noted that according to the current agreement between the local government and China Southern Power Grid, the latter is required to ensure a stable electricity supply to Macau.

Consequently, Tam said, electricity prices paid by households and businesses in Macau “are not comparable” to those paid by households and businesses in the mainland.

Electricity prices in Macau are reportedly higher than those in the mainland.
