The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) forecast on its official website last night that a still unnamed tropical depression was expected to affect Macau within three days.

The observatory said that a tropical depression located east of the Philippines was “gradually intensifying”. It added that according to its expected track, the depression was forecast to come within 800 kilometres of Macau early tomorrow, adding that Standby Signal No.1 would be issued accordingly.

Signal No.1 is the lowest of Macau’s tropical cyclone warning signals. It is hoisted when a tropical cyclone comes within 800 kilometres of Macau. Its higher warning typhoon signals are the No.3, No.8, No.9, and No.10.

The weather bureau said it expected the tropical depression to move towards western Guangdong’s coastal areas. Considering that there was still uncertainty late last night about its track and intensity, the weather station said it was closely monitoring its development and movement.

The bureau urged the public to pay close attention to its regular weather information updates.
