A woman from the mainland was arrested on Friday for theft by finding after stealing a phone worth 4,400 patacas that had been left in a shopping mall, Public Security Police (PSP) spokesman Lam Keong said during a regular press conference yesterday.
Lam identified the suspect as a 31-year-old female surnamed Hu who claimed to be jobless.
According to Lam, the Public Security Police (PSP) received a report on Thursday evening from a mainland woman who said she had dropped her phone, valued at 4,400 patacas, in a shopping mall on Avenida da Nave Desportiva (體育館大馬路). Suspecting that someone had taken the phone, she immediately reported the case to the police.
Lam noted that through citywide CCTV surveillance and the shopping mall’s footage, the police identified Hu as the suspect and arrested her on Friday in her hotel guestroom in the city centre.
Under questioning, Hu admitted to picking up the phone, claiming that she was waiting for the owner to call to retrieve it. The police recovered the phone from Hu’s guestroom.
Hu has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP), facing a charge of theft by finding.
